17 Bullfrog Lakes

A vigorous climb through some of the Sierra’s finest wildflower gardens to a pair of high alpine lakes.

Start: Farewell Gap Trailhead.

Total distance: 17 miles.

Difficulty: Moderately strenuous.

Total climbing: 4,020 feet.

Trail traffic: Medium.

Best months: July to October.

Maps: USGS Mineral King quad; Forest Service Golden Trout and South Sierra Wilderness map.

Permits: Available in advance through Sequoia National Park or at the Mineral King Ranger Station near Cold Springs Campground on the Mineral King Road.

Trailhead facilities: None. Water and toilets are available at nearby campgrounds; phones, food, and showers, at Silver City about 4 miles back down the road. The nearest reliable source of gas is 25 miles away in Three Rivers.
